The fact that globally 23 billion pairs of shoes are produced per annum¹ has had a palpable effect on the public’s increasing focus on sustainability in the shoe industry. However, it is not just the production process which impacts the environment. Shoes continue to have an impact even after their useful life since they are, as a rule, not recycled. By carefully selecting sustainable materials, shoe manufacturers and designers can contribute greatly towards improving the ecological balance. The wood-based and compostable lyocell fibers of the TENCEL® brand are the most sustainable fibers of all common textile fibers according to the HIGG Materials Sustainability Index (MSI)². TENCEL® fibers come from Nature and return to Nature – a sustainable solution. At Lenzing we continuously search for new potential applications for our sustainable fibers and the shoe segment is full of opportunities. In fact, shoes are now a distinct segment in the Lenzing application portfolio. Read more

Combining TENCEL® fibers and merino wool paves the way to a wealth of opportunities. On the one hand, luxury fabrics can be produced which are particularly lightweight and supple and yet still warm. On the other hand, fabrics can be made which are perfect for sportswear. The outdoor specialist, Schöffel, have put this superb combination to use in their current retail line. Beginning in November, women’s and men’s ski underwear of TENCEL® fibers and merino wool were on show in the display windows of a total of 30 shops in three countries. They will be featured in Schöffel shops until the end of December. A mailing campaign rounds off this co-operation. When purchasing two underwear garments, customers will receive a headband of TENCEL® fibers/merino wool for free.

A+A Düsseldorf takes place every two years and is the world’s largest trade fair for occupational health and safety (A+A). For the newly established segment “Workwear & Protective Wear,” this event is the leading trade fair in this specialist business field. The market convenes in Düsseldorf – a good opportunity for Lenzing to present new products made of Lenzing™ FR for personal protective equipment (PSA) and protective clothing to the interested visitors. With more than 300 exhibitors in the safety and health shoe product category, the A+A is of key importance for our relatively new shoe segment. Stringent technical requirements are paramount as is the fulfillment of international standards and norms. And yet even in this discerning segment, the theme of sustainability is not neglected. Lenzing presented the Botanic Shoe Concept at this year’s A+A and sounded out other possibilities for development.
In co-operation with VPZ GmbH from Graz, Lenzing™ is now revolutionizing the Swiss retail sector, following the Austrian one, with solutions for fruit and vegetable packaging based on cellulose. The reusable Packnatur® cellulose bag of Lenzing Modal® fibers wraps fresh fruits and vegetables in 100% wood and keeps them fresh longer. Bags, cords, and the practical cord locks (wood turned in a regional crafts business) are of FSC certified beech wood that has been thinned out from native forests. The bag is reusable and thereby complements baskets and other packaging that allows grocery shopping free of plastic. The bag developed by the VPZ packaging center has been on sale in sets of three in the fruit and vegetable department of COOP, the Swiss supermarket chain, as an alternative to NDPE-plastic bags.
