Industry leaders have come together to create a capsule collection that reveals new depths in denim. Lenzing will present “Midnight Blues” at Kingpins Amsterdam Oct. 25-26, a men’s and women’s collection made in partnership with sustainable fashion designer Pawan Kumar, denim manufacturer Saitex and more than a dozen global mills with sustainable initiatives. “The ‘Midnight Blues’ collection proves just how beautiful, versatile and sustainable denim can be,” said Tricia Carey, director of global business development for denim at Lenzing.
The denim industry is learning to do more with less. And one such leader in the sector’s new sustainable education, is Anubha, a young denim mill in India. The facility feels the industry is long overdue for a more environmentally-responsible revamp—starting with the raw materials. That’s why at Anubha, denim fabric is manufactured from fibers such as organic cotton and TENCEL™ Lyocell.
At the recent Denim Days in New York City, a panel of experts solidified the notion that denim is entering a new era of sustainability—one that prides minimizing water use just as much as ushering in the latest trend. Speaking on a panel moderated by Lenzing director of global business development for denim, Tricia Carey, industry experts including, “The Godfather of Denim” Adriano Goldschmied, 3×1 founder Scott Morrison and Reformation director of denim and special projects Jordan Nodarse spoke about denim’s shift and what to expect from a greener blue-rooted industry.
Cotton may have long been the sole fiber for denim, but that has changed as the beloved wardrobe staple has evolved with both the times and the new demands for sustainability. For Artistic Milliners, making denim is an art and its creative process is centered around sustainability. “Sustainability is a long-term journey for Artistic Milliners where we continuously learn and improve ourselves; that is why we focus on building a strategy where sustainability is a key element of restorative and regenerative design,” said Ebru Ozaydin, senior vice president for sales and marketing at Artistic Milliners.
Though it may have started out quietly changing the denim industry, Saitex is drawing attention and becoming increasingly prominent as one of the sector’s most sustainable facilities. The Vietnam-based manufacturing operation produces premium denim and over-dyed products, with a capacity of more than 6 million garments per year. The latest Carved in Blue denim capsule launch at Kingpins Amsterdam is produced by Saitex and designed by emerging designer, Pawan Kumar.
