Since 1992, Lenzing’s flagship textile brand TENCEL™ has empowered companies across the textile value chain to adopt more eco-friendly practices by producing fibers made from renewable wood sources. From their botanic origin, to the low environmental impact of production, to eventual biodegradability on disposal, the fibers exemplify sustainability in the textile industry.
For many students, college coursework is the first step toward building a career in their chosen field. Exemplifying this, a number of graduates from the Fashion Institute of Technology’s denim class have gone on to work in the industry. Carved in Blue is catching up with students from the course to see where their post-graduate lives have taken them.
With TENCEL™ Modal with Indigo Color technology, the world of indigo is expanding. The spun-dyed fibers are colorfast, allowing them to be used in more applications—including knits—thereby bringing the blue hue to more categories. World Textile Sourcing has adopted these indigo modal fibers for a knit apparel collection. The U.S.-based sourcing firm is the largest manufacturer and importer of Peru-made fashion to the American market, producing more than 2 million garments per month in its 15 partner factories. WTS also has a long history of using TENCEL™ fibers.
In 2015, the United Nations’ member states established the Sustainable Development Goals to drive positive change when it comes to people and planet. To address and advance the adoption of the goals specifically within the fashion industry, the Fashion Impact Fund created the Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle Network in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Partnerships. On June 2 at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle Network held its first annual meeting.

With his long relationship to Lenzing, Aamir was a fitting figure to kick off our podcast series about the 30th anniversary of TENCEL™.
