A secret garden is a treasure trove all on its own, but when it’s a secret garden made entirely of denim, bluebloods – and even those without an insatiable love for denim – go crazy. That’s what innovative artist Ian Berry is delivering to the public with his latest work in indigo. The U.K.-born creator, known for his denim “paintings” that boast a depth and craftsmanship not otherwise done with denim, has launched a Secret Garden installation at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in Manhattan.
Once denim gets in your blood, it’s hard not to pass it to the next generation. That’s what happened with Jessica Lawrence, director of brand and design for M.i.h Jeans, the self-titled, “London girls’ denim brand.” For Lawrence, it was the blending of business and creativity that sparked a greater interest in joining the industry her mother, Jill, had already been a part of.
A look back in time with some of the designers who first recognized the fashion potential of a fiber ahead of its time – and who early on embraced one of its key qualities: sustainability. In 1992 TENCEL® branded lyocell fibers came on the scene full of promise and its qualities attracted fashion designers, including Adriano Goldschmied, Sigrid Olsen, Jhane Barnes and others, like honeybees to a flower.
One young girl is getting bent out of shape over denim with TENCEL® branded lyocell fibers. In fact, as a contortionist, Liu Teng gets bent out of shape for a living – and she’s setting records doing it in denim made with TENCEL® fibers. Dubbed the most flexible woman in China, the 25-year-old just broke a Guinness World Record for fastest time to travel 20 meters in a contortion roll, clocking 15.54 seconds.
When denim minds merge, it often means a beautiful thing. That’s what happened when the Phlaphongphanit and Sachathep families joined forces to develop Atlantic Mills Thailand Company. The families’ apparel knowledge goes back as far as the 30s. Those decades of learning how to deliver on consumer demand have made Atlantic Mills successful, but it’s also a tight family bond that’s brought the business to where it is today.
